What Counts as Business Mileage?(show)

Business mileage may include travel between business locations, travel to meet clients or customers, trips to obtain supplies, travel to temporary work locations, and other qualifying business travel.

Commuting from home to a regular or principal work location is generally personal commuting and is generally not deductible.

Keep a mileage log showing the date, destination, business purpose, and miles driven. You should also maintain records for parking fees, tolls, and other vehicle-related expenses.

Common Mileage Mistakes

  • Including commuting miles between home and a regular work location
  • Estimating miles without a mileage log or supporting records
  • Mixing personal miles with business miles
  • Claiming both standard mileage and actual vehicle expenses without confirming eligibility
  • Forgetting that the IRS mileage rate can change by tax year or effective date
  • Assuming a vehicle expense is deductible without a business purpose

Official IRS Sources

Mileage rates last reviewed: August 11, 2026. The IRS standard business mileage rate changed during 2026. Rates must be applied by the date the business miles were driven, not by tax year alone.

Educational use only. This calculator provides a simplified, general estimate of a potential federal business vehicle deduction using the standard mileage method based solely on information entered by the user and the selected tax-year settings. It is not tax, legal, accounting, financial, or investment advice. It does not prepare or file a tax return, determine eligibility for a vehicle deduction, determine whether travel qualifies as business travel, or guarantee any tax deduction, tax savings, tax treatment, or compliance result.

Actual deductions may differ based on the taxpayer's business use, vehicle ownership or lease terms, actual expenses, depreciation, prior method elections, business purpose, commuting rules, substantiation records, vehicle type, reimbursement arrangements, tax law, and federal, state, and local requirements. The standard mileage method may not be available or optimal in every situation. Consult current IRS guidance and a qualified tax professional before claiming a vehicle deduction.
