When to Review Your Withholding
Consider reviewing withholding after a major change in income, family status, employment, retirement, or investment income.
- More than one job: Each employer generally withholds as if it is your only income, which can leave the household under-withheld overall.
- Non-wage income: Self-employment, investment, rental, and retirement distributions often have little or no withholding, which may call for estimated payments or adjusted withholding.
- Family and life changes: Marriage, divorce, a new dependent, a home purchase, or a large bonus can change your overall tax picture during the year.
Where Do I Find These Numbers?(show)
- Expected wages and withholding: Generally shown on a recent pay statement (year-to-date gross pay and year-to-date federal income tax withheld) or on last year's Form W-2.
- Non-wage income: Generally shown on prior-year Forms 1099, Schedule C, Schedule E, or your bookkeeping reports.
- Filing status and jobs: Based on how you expect to file this year and the number of jobs held in the household.
