Understanding Medical Practice Revenue Cycle Metrics

Gross charges are the amounts billed before contractual adjustments, write-offs, denials, and collection outcomes.

Contractual adjustments are reductions associated with payer contracts and other adjustments. Net collectible charges are the estimated charges remaining after contractual adjustments.

Net collection rate generally measures collections compared with adjusted or expected collectible charges. This calculator uses only the aggregate assumptions entered and does not calculate a formal billing metric.

Denial rate reflects the portion of claims or charges affected by denials. A denial may be resolved, adjusted, appealed, resubmitted, written off, or remain unpaid depending on facts and payer rules.

Days in accounts receivable is a measure of how long it may take for the practice to collect outstanding balances. Reducing days in A/R may improve cash timing, but it does not guarantee additional revenue.

Common Practice Revenue Cycle Mistakes

  • Using billed charges as if they are collected revenue
  • Ignoring contractual adjustments, write-offs, denials, and bad debt
  • Tracking only total A/R without reviewing its age and collectibility
  • Ignoring delayed claims submission and payment posting
  • Failing to monitor denial patterns and root causes
  • Assuming every denial is recoverable
  • Treating an A/R reduction as new revenue
  • Entering patient, claim, payer, or protected health information into public tools
  • Treating this calculator as coding, billing, compliance, or reimbursement advice

Schedule a Medical Practice Financial Review

Educational use only. This calculator provides a simplified, general estimate of potential healthcare-practice collections, contractual adjustments, denial impact, bad debt impact, accounts receivable, and cash-flow opportunities based solely on aggregate financial assumptions entered by the user. It is not medical, healthcare, billing, coding, reimbursement, compliance, HIPAA, tax, legal, accounting, financial, valuation, payer-contracting, or investment advice. It does not prepare, submit, correct, appeal, adjudicate, process, validate, or determine claims, coding, charges, reimbursement, medical necessity, coverage, eligibility, patient responsibility, denials, payment obligations, or compliance requirements.

Actual practice collections, reimbursement, denials, A/R, and cash flow may differ materially because of payer contracts, fee schedules, coding, documentation, authorization, eligibility, claim submission, billing practices, payment posting, patient collections, write-offs, bad debt, staffing, technology, regulations, compliance requirements, market conditions, and other factors. Consult qualified healthcare billing, coding, compliance, legal, tax, accounting, and financial professionals before making practice-management, reimbursement, operational, employment, compensation, or financial decisions.

Do not enter patient names, dates of birth, medical record numbers, claim numbers, diagnosis codes, procedure codes, insurance member IDs, payment information, appointment information, treatment information, or any protected health information. Calculator inputs and results are processed locally in the visitor's browser and are not intentionally saved or transmitted by this calculator.
